The buck stops here. President Harry S. Truman had a sign printed with this slogan, and he kept it on his desk as a reminder of all the responsibilities of his job. As principal at SOHS, I, too, believe that the buck stops with me. I work with my administrative team to be sure that attention to literacy is a natural part of all our content areas; I encourage our literacy coach to help teachers understand and implement disciplinary literacy; and I lead the faculty in identifying and providing professional development opportunities to support writing instruction.
It is my goal to increase my communication with parents and the community about all the ways our writing program helps ensure student success. This webpage will help with that. Check out the video about our writing community, which is a great discussion by both teachers and students. Then open the attachment and spend a few minutes reading our Writing Action Plan and then think about how you--faculty, staff, parents, community members--can share in the critical work of building literacy for the 21st century.
